It was a heart-stopping moment for the villagers of Castlevaddo, Aldona, on Monday when a dog accidentally fell into an open well near the roadside.
Despite frantic efforts by locals, the animal remained trapped until the Mapusa Fire Brigade arrived, turning a potential tragedy into a story of hope and timely action.
Led by Fire Officer Prakash Kannak, the rescue team arrived swiftly at the scene. Using ropes and careful manoeuvring, they pulled the terrified animal to safety.
“We received a call about a dog that had fallen into a nearby well. Fortunately, it survived because it stood on a small cave-like ledge inside the well – otherwise, it might not have made it,” Kannak said.
While the rescue had a happy ending, it also exposed a pressing issue: the neglected state of open wells in residential areas.
The well in question, overgrown with tall grass and located close to the road, poses a serious hazard to both animals and humans.
“Today it was a dog, but tomorrow it could be a person,” Kannak warned.
He urged local residents and the village panchayat to take preventive measures, including clearing the area, securing the well with proper barriers, and ensuring regular maintenance.
“People must come together and resolve this issue. The water from this well is being used by many, and since it’s already filled with dirt and waste, it could pose a health and safety risk,” he added.
For the villagers, the rescue was a moment of relief, but also a reminder of shared responsibility.
