North Goa’s water supply capacity is set for a major boost with two new pumping stations at Amthane and Sal expected to add a combined 400 million litres per day (MLD) to the system. The government is aiming to commission the Amthane facility from October 1.
Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar inspected the ongoing works at Amthane in Bicholim and Sal, reviewing the pumping infrastructure and construction of the Sal check dam.
The projects are aimed at meeting the rising demand for water in North Goa, particularly in fast-growing areas such as Porvorim and Pilerne.
The new Amthane pumping station will pump 150 MLD of water to the Assonora water treatment plant. The Water Resources Department has set October 1 as the target for the station to become fully operational.
The larger Sal pumping station will have a capacity of 250 MLD, adding significant pumping capacity to the North Goa network.
The project is being developed alongside the Sal check dam, which is nearing completion and will have a storage capacity of around five million cubic metres.
The additional infrastructure is expected to strengthen the water supply system, particularly during the summer months when demand rises sharply and pressure on available water resources increases.
During his inspection, Shirodkar directed officials to complete the remaining works within the stipulated deadlines and ensure that the new infrastructure is commissioned without further delay.
The minister said the projects would strengthen North Goa’s long-term water security and help the government meet the growing demand for potable water.
