The government of Goa is doing it’s best to put up a large campus for IIT in Goa and unlike many other initiatives which are dropped when they encounter hurdles, this one is being driven with zeal. Common sense dictates that government should pursue initiatives which benefit the majority of the citizens. What we need is to improve the quality of affordable education to the public. This can happen only by improving government schools both at primary and secondary levels. I would guess that only 1 per cent or lesser students have the competence to qualify for a seat in IIT institutes. Out of this minuscule percentage a large majority of IIT graduates leave our shores for greener pastures abroad. So other than bragging rights -- on Indian talent in foreign countries-- do these elite institutions benefit the nation. Government would do well to get their priorities right.
