During recent years, the village panchayat of Adpai-Durbhat in Ponda has undertaken the initiative of door-to-door collection of garbage in this jurisdiction. However, it has been noticed that instead of delivering garbage to the concerned labourer visiting their houses, residents prefer dumping it inside the drains, nullahs and also in open areas. Hence the very purpose of keeping this jurisdiction neat and tidy stands defeated. On most occasions, elected representatives at this VP have been neglecting the matter of levying fines on people dumping garbage at different spots. As a result, unhygienic conditions become the order of the day. Reluctance to hand garbage to the labourer undertaking door to door collection in itself is a mere waste of public funds in terms of salary paid to the concerned labourer. Unless the defaulters are taken to task and fined, no positive change would be achieved in assuring Swachchata in this particular jurisdiction. The Directorate of Panchayats should take a serious view of this matter and issue necessary instructions to this VP to deal strictly with people dumping garbage here and there.
