India is on the Moon

It is a historic moment for India as our Chandrayaan-3 lander Vikram has successfully completed its soft landing on the Moon’s South Pole. Our scientists’ hard work and talent have finally paid off, and all Indians around the world are proud to be Indian and have wished the ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) team for their success.

Prime Minister Modi, who is in South Africa for the BRICS summit, called the space chief Somnath and wished him and his team. He said that Somnath means “Chandra” (moon), and that this is a proud and happy moment for India.

Following the successful landing on Wednesday, a solar-powered rover will explore the surface of the relatively unmapped lunar South Pole and transmit data to Earth over its two-week lifespan. Chandrayaan-3 touched down at 6:04 pm, as mission control technicians cheered wildly and embraced their colleagues. Citizens of India came out in large numbers on the streets, waving national flags and celebrating the victory.
