Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has been facing the wrath of the BJP for the statements made by him during the week-long tour of the UK. The BJP has also charged Rahul for asking Europe and the US to intervene to save democracy in India. Tasked with tarnishing Rahul’s image at the slightest pretext, BJP leaders waste no time in distorting narrative. It may be recalled that PM Narendra Modi targeted domestic opposition whenever on foreign soil. He has repeatedly politicised the gathering of the Indian diaspora abroad. The incident of large gatherings of Indian-Americans for the “Howdy Modi” event in Houston in 2019 where he endorsed Donald Trump for presidential elections is still fresh in mind. The West has, of late, emerged as the BJP’s favourite concern. Be it the government’s recent retaliation against the BBC or the foreign minister’s diatribe of Western nations on a range of issues, the Centre wastes no time in pointing an accusing finger at the West. In view of the current troubled India-China relationship, India needs to keep the West in good humour without distancing it.
