The Palestinian statehood gained traction as Britain, Canada, Australia and Portugal came on the heels of France taking a stance for a two-state solution. The development is a big blow to the monopoly of the US and a setback for Israel that had counted on these Western allies since its inception. These recognitions come against the backdrop of the ongoing genocide in Gaza, rising violence in the West Bank, and decades of stalled negotiations. More than 65,000 Gazans have been martyred and thousands more maimed in barbaric onslaughts since then. The political messaging is strong in this right now but the UNSC, which must ratify such a move, is unlikely to be ever allowed to recognise Palestine statehood so long as Israel, with the help of Jewish power controlling the US veto, is able to block it. The Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu is hell bent in preventing the creation of two states. Until sincere steps are taken to stop Gaza’s killing and make Israel commit to the two-state solution, recognition and statements of condemnation will not amount to much.
