The alleged clandestine shifting of a massive casino vessel to the Mandovi River severely threatens the river's environment, traffic flow, and carrying capacity. Mandovi is a living river and Goa's primary lifeline. For centuries it has sustained settlements, fisheries, navigation, trade and culture. Any other activities inside this river endangers water, food, security, ecology and future generations. The GSPCB and other authorities have over the years flagged violations and non-compliance related to casino operations on the Mandovi. Expert members raised concerns over the Mandovi River’s deteriorating health conditions. The Mandovi River is already hosting several casinos, and experts warn that adding another huge vessel would worsen pollution levels and likely to cause ecological imbalance in the Mandovi in future. Launching new floating casinos will create a man-made disaster in the Mandovi and pose navigational hazards. The present move has once again brought focus to casino regulation and environmental governance in Goa. Scams, legalizing illegal constructions by bending the rules have become a norm in Goa. The government and its authorities should not play with the sentiments of the people.
