This is with reference to the report "90 per cent firms not disposing off hazardous waste safely - The Goan Everyday - February 27, 2024." The authorities seem to have taken the right step with regard to action against industries flouting pollution norms in Goa. One fails to understand the mentality of our people. They just don't want to understand the implications of their actions. And this is evident, I suppose all across the country. Disposal of waste, especially hazardous waste is a mammoth, daunting task. They pollute not only the rivers or other wetlands but anything and everything. In Mumbai for instance, we have seen the disastrous consequences in the deluge of 2005, when the Mithi river along with the drainage channels overflowed and brought Mumbai to a standstill. Needless to say, the strictest action should be taken not just against polluting industries but against all those who dispose off waste haphazardly, which includes hawkers, the slums and the general public littering the streets. Sincerity in action is important.
