Despite being a part of a modern and connected India, Goa remains an exception where public taxis continue to operate without fare meters, flouting norms that are standard in every other state. For instance, a late-night trip from Margao railway station to Chinchinim can cost up to ₹950, while the app-based GoaMiles charges only ₹270 for a similar route from Benaulim to Chinchinim, just two samples. Private vehicle owners, offering more reasonable and dependable services, are often the only relief to locals and visitors alike ” though they operate under the constant threat of backlash from organized taxi unions. Successive governments have consistently failed to enforce fare meters, despite offering subsidies for their installation. The influence of taxi unions ” allegedly significant due to vote-bank politics ” has allowed them to operate unchecked. It is high time the government stood firm on this issue. Fare meters with printed receipts should be made mandatory, with licenses revoked for non-compliance.
