Vigilance key to avoid unfortunate stampedes

In the ferocious stampede at the zatra of the famous Lairai Devi at Shirgao in Goan, eight devotees died and many other devotees got injured. A very unfortunate event. In last years, there have been many such unfortunate incidents which have occurred at religious programmes. Some accidents are so serious that, it is never possible to forget them. The mind should be serene for the attainment of God. The unstable mind is unable to attain God. In the festival rush, there are always three types of people: Wanderers, loafers and genuine devotees. Due to the wanderers and loafers in the rush, the genuine devotees get trapped. This creates confusion and then accidents occur. At such zatras with potential for stampedes, both the organizers and management committee should be vigilant, so such unfortunate incidents can be avoided.

Goans seem to still live in the 20th century as our susegado attitude and lack of discipline are some factors responsible for this invited tragedy at Lairai zatra at Shirgao. The stalls should be at least 1-2 km away from the ceremonial route and two barricaded queues, one for movement of dhonds and the other for devotees should be erected to avoid such calamity in future.
