When today I witness live on television, after we have experienced Nirbhaya and thereafter so many ghastly rapes, a 12-year-old girl half naked, bleeding and walking through a street in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh in a daze begging for help and no one coming to help but in fact shooing her away and we learn she has been brutalized and raped. I wonder what kind of projected superior society we are living in. A great religious nation with national pride and fantastic space achievements, expecting to soon become a super power with the third largest economy in the world and having a say in world affairs, having just passed a women's reservation Bill, a master stroke that keeps it in abeyance till a census and delimitation is done. Today we learn of parents selling/bartering their daughters for monetary and lucrative gains, child trafficking, gender discrimination, terrible hate speeches right from very senior Parliament members and in the new Parliament building, polarization, lynching and violence, pollution everywhere and unsolved Manipur problem. I want to ask “What doth it profit a nation to gain the whole world and suffer the loss of its soul?”
