With reference to your news item on pollution of water bodies caused due to human waste, I disagree with Sanjeev Joglekar's view that human poop present in the water bodies has always been there for hundred of years however now that has decreased to an extent. For thousands of years humans have pooped in the open so do animals. That has really not affected our river beds which also have been existent for hundred of years. Poop is biodegradable. What's really happening nowadays and specially in Goa and other places in India is that, hotels and restaurants tend to scavenge out their fats/ oils and grease from the kitchens along with sewage from their sewage pits and this is thrown into the environment. The sewage waste binds to the oils. The problem is oil does not disintegrate and forms clusters like tar balls which are seen on our beaches, in river beds and the sea. There is no point in trying to clean the water beds. The authorities must work to stop this at source. They need to target the hotels and restaurants to find a solution to this problem.
