It is very unfortunate that we have a confrontational attitude prevailing in almost everything in the political arena in India today. The working relationship between Governors in the States and their Chief Ministers and respective governments is far from normal. This is mostly in the States where non-BJP governments are in power. Take the latest instance where Governor Ananda Bose in Bengal took exception to the convocation held by the officiating Vice Chancellor at Jadavpur University. The VC, citing earlier precedents in Bengal, went ahead and held the convocation. The Governor should realise that he should be cooperative in the running of the University of which he is the Chancellor. The convocation is an important function in the calendar of the University and crucial for the students passing out. Putting obstacles in the holding of the convocation does not behove the person and the highest office of the University.
In the same manner, the Governor of Kerala is in a running battle with the incumbent CPM government in the State and the CM Pinarayil Vijayan. Matters came to a head recently when the Supreme Court had to give strictures to the Governor to release official files sent by the State government which had been kept pending with the Governor for no rhyme or reason. The latest in this battle is the request of the State CM to the Centre to call back the Governor.
One need not highlight here the confrontational attitude prevailing between the Delhi CM and the Lt Governor since it figures almost every day in the newspapers. Where responsible and experienced people who hold high office do not follow the boundaries of their responsibilities set by the Constitution and constantly infringe on them for petty matters of ego and delusion, then such people should not hold the office of the Governor and demit it forthwith. They should also remember that the person holding the office of the Chief Minister of the State is an elected member of the people while the Governor is a government appointee.
We had not seen such things in the past, and one wonders why is happening now. Is it the agenda of the Centre to deliberately destabilise non-BJP governments that is being orchestrated through the politically appointed office of the Governor?
