Converting fish waste into beneficial compost

Fish markets across the state produce large quantities of fish waste. This waste is disposed of in an unscientific manner. The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has admitted that there are unauthorized activities of fish cutting and cleaning in large quantities at wholesale fish-market and the waste generated on account of these activities is disposed of in an unhygienic manner. It is a well known fact that raw fish waste serves as an excellent manure for coconut and other fruit-bearing trees. Fish waste can also be converted into compost which has the advantage of having nutrient content consisting of potassium, calcium and magnesium.. Civic bodies in the state need to have a programme in place whereby the fish waste produced in the markets, especially the wholesale market in Margao, is converted into compost and distributed to farmers and even sold to citizens to be used in their gardens. It will go a long way in making fish waste beneficial in farming and boost growth of plants in the gardens. This in turn can even earn some revenue for the civic bodies.
