Saligao Sarpanch Lucas Remedios has reportedly shot a letter to the Managing Director of the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) questioning the department's decision to allow waste of Sonsodo to be treated at the Saligao treatment plant on a daily basis. He has even threatened to call for a special gram sabha to discuss the said issue and to drum up support from surrounding villages against the move.
Well, it should be noted that the said nuisance creating garbage treatment plant was set atop the Saligao-Calangute plateau after spending a whopping Rs 140 crore by bullying the people of Saligao in particular despite of strong protests from many vigilant locals/NGOs in the past.
Today, the said plant has indeed turned into a big nightmare, especially for the villagers of Saligao and with it's recent 'expansion' which allows the plant to handle 250 tonnes of garbage per day, things have really gone from bad to worse.
The plant is currently not just emitting foul smell in air but has even contaminated/polluted (though the government officials still keep denying the same charge) the ground water of most wells in the village, including the water of the once famous Salmona Spring of Saligao.
I therefore personally feel that the Saligaokars, instead of relying on the false assurances of our politicians should seriously come together and sternly warn the Managing Director of Goa Waste Management Corporation not to transport the waste piled up in the old treatment plant at Sonsodo to Saligao treatment plant.
