The move to allow cultivation of cannabis (weed & marijuana) in the state, strictly for medical purpose, would be a dangerous idea as Goa has always had its fair share of problems with drugs.
Earlier, Goa was a consumption and transit point for drugs. This new concept of cultivation of cannabis will not only ruin Goa but will also send the wrong message in the tourism sector. If given the nod, cannabis cultivation would lead Goan youth either to drug addiction or drug peddling and convert the state into a drug den.
When the tourism industry in Goa is still struggling to return to normal, the State should be ptotected from turning it into an illicit narcotics growing and manufacturing haven. However, there is no scientific study yet to conclusively prove that legalising cannabis leads to a healthier relationship with drugs and substance abuse. Instead of cultivating cannabis the govt should encourage cultivation of tomato, onion, potato, etc.
