Learn from Dandeavaddo fatal mishap: Install speed breakers

A massive gathering at Dandeavaddo in Chinchinim attempted to highlight the dangers at the accident-prone point after the recent tragic death of a local resident. The speed breakers at entry point have disappeared after hot mixing of the road.

The road from Chinchinim slopes down to the highway and is a  dangerous entry. There is heavy movement of traffic from 3 adjoining villages to Chinchinim. Fortunately, the students are off the road.

The major district road has been re-designated as NH-17 passing through thickly populated  area. All attempts to divert it have met with no success, but on the contrary it is proposed to be converted into a 6 lane strip which is likely to compound the problem further with hordes of cattle aggravating the risk further.

It will be a temporary relief if speed breakers are installed here. The rumblers at present are no hindrance at all.

The Panchayat is the main forum to propose  safety measures within its jurisdiction but unfortunately at the protest meet   commotion was created over non-invite to it. What is feasible immediately is  to clear the blind spot by removing  the obstruction that block the view of main road, as Govt has acquired and paid for land and structures way back in 1988.

Best cure is to drop the proposed extension of the road as suggested by residents. More fatal or  serious accidents are waiting to happen if authorities take a lackadaisical stand.
