Don’t harass power consumers

PWD Minister Digambar Kamat’s timely intervention could well be a stitch in time to save the Goa government from major embarrassment over the contentious issues of smart meter installation and penalty charges for overconsumption of power, in the face of the raging public outcry.

It is time for Power Minister Sudin Dhavalikar to realise the futility of installing smart meters in a system that is unable to cope with the demand and supply of uninterrupted power to consumers, with frequent power outages and breakdowns, requiring the use of inverters and voltage regulators in every house.

Let us set our house in order before attempting to keep up with the Jones’s. Secondly, while several states are supplying 300 units of free electricity to every house, why cannot Goa emulate their example. Instead, people are being harassed by the imposition of power hikes and penalty charges for no fault of theirs.
