The letter titled "Frog meat poses health hazard" in The Goan dated July 8 brings back many fond memories. In the Goan community this was a much loved delicacy in every home and restaurant in Goa.
There are a variety of frogs that are found around in every small garden. The others hibernate in ponds or rivers, resurfacing during the first rains.
These are the ones who start croaking loudly as if they need more rains. These are the frogs which Goans would catch and enjoy at home and in restaurants in yesteryears.
This was so popular that unfortunately people used to catch them in large quantities. This led to the government imposing a ban because of their importance in curbing flies, mosquitoes and all kind of insects, many of who would otherwise damage crops.
I don't exactly know about the health dangers of eating frogs, but one thing is definite that the frog numbers are surely on the decline with high rise buildings mushrooming in fields across the villages.
