Caitano Fernandes, a businessman from Dona Paula who was not known in Goan football circles until six months ago, turned the Goa Football Association (GFA) elections on its head, winning the presidential contest, ahead of Savio Alemao, son of former chief minister and football stalwart Churchill Alemao. Representing FC Tuem, Caitano picked up 83 of the 159 votes, while Savio had just 47. Former GFA secretary Welvin Menezes, who was also in the fray, received 29 votes, giving Caitano a spectacular victory. It is understood that the new president has been part of football in Goa for several years. He played for his village, school and college. Caitano reportedly said that his priority is to kick-start the Goa Pro League as soon as possible and that he is ready to sponsor the league. His other promises include starting the work of Duler turf and having zonal offices. It now seems that Goan football administration will be free from political influence. It must be said that Goan football is now in good hands. Wishing the new GFA chief all the very best in his endeavours.
