Deportations of Goans from the US should perhaps not come as a shock, given the scope of opportunities in that country. This applies across the country as well. Expired passports or travel documents may be among the reasons people get stranded in the US, but the American dream continues to lure many to settle there by hook or by crook. The large number of Goans opting for Portuguese passports indicates a desire to leave behind the mess at home and head West in search of greener pastures. However, sooner or later, reality hits hard: the grass, after all, is not always greener on the other side.
