The 43 year old lighthouse at the edge of the fast eroding Campal coast behind Kala Bhavan is almost on the verge of collapse as evidenced by the exposed reinforcement bars, flaking concrete and compromised foundation.
Concrete blocks had been placed at its base to prevent it from toppling over but they too have been consumed by the sea.
The 22 meter tall structure impacted by salinity and wave action is now a veritable danger to pedestrians and joggers using the promenade adjoining it.
The lighthouse has been slated for structural rehabilitation since 2016 but the government has done precious little, it should be demolished completely and possibly a replica built in its place.
