This refers to 'Youth suffocates to death while cleaning septic tank' (TGE, January 13). This incident in Mapusa was indeed very unfortunate. Even after the Supreme Court directive to eradicate manual scavenging across the country, we have another death, in Goa.
Apparently, no safety measures seem to have been taken while continuing to resort to manual scavenging. The authorities need to understand that monetary compensation is not going to bring the dead back to life. Manual scavenging must be eradicated. Human life has some value and dignity.
