Many Goans living abroad often say, “Gõycho sambal korunk zai” (Goans must protect Goa). Yet, thousands have left the state permanently, leaving behind abandoned homes or properties for sale. While many have embraced new cultures and built successful lives overseas, few actively contribute to preserving Goa’s heritage or addressing its present-day challenges. Sharing nostalgic reels about Goa’s past alone will not protect its future or help solve the pressing issues affecting the state and its people today.
It is unfair to expect the Goans who continue to live and work here to carry the entire responsibility of safeguarding the state. Many overseas Goans have even adopted foreign citizenship and voting rights, building distinguished public careers abroad. Such achievements deserve recognition in their adopted countries, while Goa’s future depends on those committed to its welfare at home.
Today, in many parts of Goa, outsiders outnumber native Goans because so many locals left in search of better opportunities. Those who remain will continue to protect Goa. Instead of lecturing them from afar, let us support their efforts to preserve Goa’s identity and future.
