Public transport gap and austerity measures

The government is urging citizens to conserve fuel and support national resource conservation. In Goa, public transport mainly consists of state-run buses and ferries, but poor last-mile connectivity forces many residents to rely on private vehicles. Interior residential areas remain poorly linked to transport hubs, while services reduce significantly after 8 pm. Tourists often rent vehicles due to limited transport options. The absence of cab aggregators such as Ola, Uber and Rapido, along with unregulated autorickshaw and taxi fares, increases travel costs. Poor road conditions and limited online information on bus routes, schedules and fares further inconvenience residents and visitors.

Over the past few months, there has been much ado and ‘carrot dangling’ by the Chief Minister about a cabinet reshuffle and filling up the vacant cabinet berth of the late Agriculture Minister, Ravi Naik, with a few MLAs eagerly waiting in the wings. With less than a year left for the 2027 Goa Assembly polls, I wonder what miracles can be wrought in the remaining few months. On the contrary, it would be more prudent and beneficial to the State if a few ministers are replaced…
