The PWD is reported to be toying with idea of topping up some of the badly potholed Goa roads with a 6-8 inch thick layer of M-40 grade concrete which is expected to increase the life span of the road by 30 years. In the first place, the entire idea appears to be preposterous, as once again the problem of improper bonding between asphalt and concrete will arise, as in the case of the Atal Setu bridge. Cracks are also bound to appear, due to overloading of the sub-base, leading to its subsidence and the possibility of caving in. In such a case, it would make more sense to go in for a fully concrete road which will be more economical and hassle-free, as well as require a concrete thickness of around 5-6 inches and of a lesser grade of concrete. Such an experiment was earlier carried our successfully on the Miramar-Dona Paula stretch without any hassles. It is time we learnt from our past mistakes, lest we end up with one more scam.
