It was reportedly decided at the Benaulim Gram Sabha that under no circumstances the treated sewage water from the Colva Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) will find its way into the river Sal via Benaulim. It must be said that instead of discharging the treated sewage water into the river, this water can be put to use. The industries can use this water for sanitation and gardening. The treated water can be stored in water tanks and then there can probably be a tie-up with any of the hotels from the hospitality industry or Tourism Department in order to use treated water. It is understood that the Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services uses treated water to douse major fires. Earlier potable water from the Cauvery Basin was used whenever there was a fire mishap. Irrespective of the water used, the main intention is to reduce the temperature generated by the fire and douse the blaze. Tertiary treated water is good enough to be used by the fire engines to douse the fire. In Goa too, a system could be put in place whereby the fire engines are filled with tertiary treated water at the water treatment plant which can be used to douse fires.
