On Dec 10 the District Magistrate (DM) of North Goa banned the use of pyrotechnics, fireworks, sparklers, flame-throwing devices, smoke generators and other similar fire and smoke-producing equipment. The order covers bars, nightclubs, restaurants, resorts, hotels, shacks, banquet halls, and other indoor and semi-indoor entertainment spaces.
The order applies to all individuals, organisers and event management entities and is effective for 60 days from Dec 10, 2025 or if revoked earlier. The order allows exceptions to those who have prior written permission to use indoor pyrotechnics once the authorities check and approve if safety and risk-mitigation plans are in place. The South Goa DM had issued similar order a day earlier.
With due respect to the DMs, beaches and river banks should be covered in the order as here people throng, walk, relax and enjoy watersports. Why should the order be revoked is a mystery as it protects the people. Concessions must not be given to those seeking written or oral permission since “An exception disproves the rule” (Sherlock Holmes). Exemptions could again result in corruption, laxity, and illegalities.
