I am writing in response to two recent articles: “Rise in Student Deaths in BITS Pilani College in Goa” and “Goa University’s Ranking Drop.” Both issues call for closer attention. The increase in student deaths at BITS Pilani, Goa, is a serious concern. Pressure from management to maintain a high reputation creates stress for both teachers and students. Goa’s image as a centre for alcohol and drugs may influence behaviour, while hostel culture marked by ragging or bullying can harm mental health. Besides, the fall in Goa University’s ranking may be linked to similar concerns. Admissions influenced by bribery or connections rather than merit create a mismatch between students and expectations. Many students come from outside Goa, while local talent is often overlooked. The quality of teaching staff is another factor that directly affects the university’s performance. If the government takes these concerns seriously and conducts a proper review, it can help improve higher education in Goa.
