With the untimely demise of Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajitdada Pawar, the state has lost a ‘Dada’”a symbol of dynamic and fearless leadership. His passing has caused an immense loss to rural Maharashtra. A visionary leader with a deep understanding of rural issues and the mindset of the common people has been lost not only by rural Maharashtra but by the entire state. Speaking the language of the people, blessed with a sharp sense of humour and a witty nature, Ajitdada stood firm despite numerous allegations and counter-allegations. He never faltered or lost focus. Although official work at Mantralaya begins at 10 am, Ajitdada’s day would often start as early as 7 am. His authority over the bureaucracy and his unique style of getting public work done were remarkable. Coming from a rural background, he always remained deeply connected to rural society. Because he spoke in the people’s language, he felt like one of their own”someone from their own home or village. Maharashtra showered him with immense love. His untimely demise is an irreparable loss to the state, and an especially profound loss to rural Maharashtra.
