After the problem of stray dogs, road accidents are now on the rise. Four days ago, there was an accident on the highway where two cars crashed at high speed, leaving a tyre rolling in the middle of the road. Many such cases involve rent-a-cab vehicles and local cars, caused by rash driving by tourists and drunk driving.
Accidents are also increasing because of potholes, especially on the Porvorim“Mapusa road. Recently, a woman lost control of her vehicle in a pothole and was injured. At present, flyovers are being built on the Porvorim“Mapusa and Dabolim“Vasco roads. But the contractors have neglected the existing roads that are used daily by thousands of commuters. Many two-wheeler riders lose balance on these potholes, fall, and suffer serious or even fatal injuries.
The potholes are continuous, leaving no proper space to ride. Every two-wheeler is forced to jump on the seat, making riders and pillion riders lose control and fall. The contractors must be instructed to maintain the existing roads and not neglect them under the excuse of flyover construction. The State government and the PWD should take this issue seriously. It is time to prevent further accidents and save lives.
