Fire incidents in Goa at homes, markets and tourism establishments have become frequent, largely because authorities often look the other way. For many owners, investing in firefighting equipment is seen as an extra burden, but when a fire breaks out, it causes heavy damage and, in the worst cases, loss of precious lives.
The recent fire at the Birch Club, where 25 people died, clearly points to serious negligence of duty. Citizens need to remain alert at all times. For instance, in public places near electrical distribution boxes, even a lit or discarded cigarette thrown on waste can start a fire. People should be proactive in responding to such situations, but only if they know the correct method to extinguish a fire near electrical equipment.
It is the responsibility of those in charge of roadside cleanliness to ensure that waste is not dumped near electrical installations, as this can turn a small spark into a major disaster. Fire safety awareness should be made compulsory in schools and public places, with regular demonstrations. Sadly, the Fire Department is understaffed and lacks the manpower to carry out such awareness programmes effectively.
One hopes that the Arpora tragedy will serve as a lesson for the Chief Minister and the government. When money power and influence allow business owners to ignore safety norms, often with the help of corrupt officials, the result is loss, suffering and destruction. This must change.
Why irregularities continue in Goa
Irregularities in Goa will not stop just because of tragic incidents like the Birch Romeo Lane fire in Arpora. Such incidents come to light, there is temporary action, but the system soon slips back into old ways. The administration often appears weak or absent, allowing violations to continue without fear. What Goa truly needs is sincere and upright IAS officers who work without compromise and act firmly against wrongdoing, regardless of pressure or influence. Only honest leadership, backed by political will, can bring lasting change. The real question is whether the system will allow such officers to function freely and effectively.
