Rohit Sharma can play in the 2027 World Cup ODI series, said Indian cricket team coach Gautam Gambhir on Tuesday. Within 24 hours of this statement, Rohit announced his sudden retirement from Test cricket. The decision came just days before the squad selection for the Test series against England. Rohit made his Test debut in November 2013 against West Indies in Kolkata, playing 67 matches, scoring 4,301 runs with 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries. Last year, after winning the T20 World Cup, Rohit had retired from T20 cricket, meaning he will now only play ODIs. Between 2022 and 2024, Rohit captained India in 24 Tests, winning 12, losing 9, and drawing 3. During the final match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Rohit had been dropped due to poor form, but he had dismissed retirement rumours at the time. There were also reports of disagreements with coach Gautam Gambhir. The man famously known as Mumbai’s "Vada Pav," who led India to T20 World Cup glory, has made it clear that he will now focus on the ODI format, aiming to win the 2027 World Cup after narrowly missing out last time.
