Probably the last catch of the fishing season, before the ban on fishing comes into force from June 1, traditional fishermen from Benaulim netted basketsful of big sized sardines during the fishing trip on Thursday.
With water sports activities registering less business for want of tourists, a group of fishermen ventured in the sea with country made boats, besides water sports boats only to net big sized sardines from the sea.
Displaying the catch before the media, traditional fisherman Pele Fernandes said the fishermen decided to venture out for a fishing trip since the water sports business is presently down for want of customers. “To our good luck, we were fortunate to net eight baskets full of big sized sardines”, a smiling Pele told the media.
He added: “We had ventured out in the sea in the morning only to return back three hours later at 11 pm. We were fortunate to catch eight basketsful of sardines”.
Pele said traditional fishermen have been eking a living on the fishing activities over the decades and centuries. “Our women carry the fish to the market for sale and balance catch is kept of drying. If there is no fish catch here, our women go to the market and buy fish for drying. The dried fish is then sold at the Purumentachem fest fair during the Holy Spirit Church feast”, he said.
