Even for a State which has seen politicians change parties at the drop of a hat since the 1967 assembly elections, the number of defections during the past five years has been humongous.
At last count, in excess of 50% of Goan MLAs elected in 2017 have switched sides. The situation today is such that legislators join party A for breakfast, by lunch they transfer to party B and by dinner time they are firmly ensconced in the arms of party C. Aya Rams, Gaya Rams have taken their art to new heights.
Ironically, the Congress which promised to eradicate the virus of 'defection' has seen 15 of it's birds leave for greener pastures. The lure of lucre and ' lucrative' posts in government bodies extended to rival MLAs in other parties by the ruling dispensation is hard to resist; like the Godfather, sometimes they make an offer you simply cannot refuse.
The saffron party is a master of the game when it comes to engineering defections but it appears even the minnows are now slowly learning the ropes.
Politics is a slippery slope and the race to the bottom is being run at warp speed as far as ethics are concerned.
