The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has decided to banthe roadside sale of fish and allow it only in the markets. This is a step inthe right direction as the illegal sale of fish was rampant in every nook andcorner of the city. During the pandemic, many of those who lost their jobs andbusinesses, including taxi drivers, took up selling fish. However, theauthorities will reportedly not permit such activity henceforth. This raisescertain pertinent questions. Will those who lost their jobs and businessesduring the pandemic be allowed to sell fish in the fish market? Several youngpeople have taken to angling and resorted to selling the fish they have caught.For many, this has become a means of livelihood. Will this sale of fish be banned?Several fish vendors, especially the migrants, sell fish door to door. Thisavailability of fish at the doorsteps has come as a blessing during thepandemic, especially to senior citizens, as crowding in the markets raises therisk of getting infected with coronavirus. Will the door-to-door sale of fishbe banned? Alternatively, the Goan fisherfolk could take over from the migrantsand sell fish from house to house as was the case in the past.
