Blue economy push calls for protecting mangroves

Blue economy reportedly gets a push as the Goa government pledges support to ramponkars. The goal of the blue economy is to balance economic growth with the preservation of marine ecosystems. It is an economic model that focuses on coastal tourism, sustainable fishing practices that ensure food security while minimizing environmental impact. It also includes harnessing energy from tidal-waves, efficient shipping practices and protecting marine ecosystems like coral reefs and mangroves. The state's coastline which stretches 160 kilometers and its marine resources have supported livelihoods for generations. Goa needs to implement stricter regulations on overfishing, pollution, and habitat destruction, while also providing incentives for businesses that prioritize sustainable practices. Government needs to invest in sustainable tourism infrastructure like eco-resorts, waste management systems, and responsible tour operators. However, for Goa’s Blue Economy to thrive, it is crucial to strike a balance between development and conservation. We need to protect our mangroves which are under threat.
