Mormugao Municipal Council along with the traffic department reportedly began a drive against abandoned and scrap vehicles at various locations in Vasco.
It is understood that 59 vehicles were picked up in the first phase of the drive. Keeping these impounded vehicles by the civic body till such time that they are disposed off, will take a lot of open space.
It must be said that abandoned vehicles have been a perennial problem not only in the port town but in other cities across the state as well.
These vehicles are not only an eyesore but also occupy precious space on already crowded city roads. Abandoned vehicles can be a serious environmental hazard as well.
The damage can be intense and prolonged. When the parts of the vehicle begin to rust, they release hazardous substances into the environment.
It is learnt that in Bengaluru traffic police now charge a fine of Rs 50 an hour on owners who have abandoned their vehicles on the road after serving them with a notice. The fine is being slapped under Section 201 of Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. In Goa too such a system needs to be put in place.
