Almost four months ago the South Goa District Collector had issued orders to the Margao Municipal Council to demolish an unsafe building at Isidoro Baptista road based on a structural assessment report by the Goa College of Engineering.
Shockingly the civic body not only allowed cosmetic renovation of the structure but also issued a trade license to the owner of the premises and a footwear showroom is operating from the ground floor as on date. It is pertinent to note that other occupants of the building have already vacated the premises, rumour has it that the well connected owner enjoys the patronage of a political Godfather.
Corroded, exposed reinforcement bars, embedded vegetation and dilapidated plaster which sometimes falls on passersby and vehicles below vouch for the perilous state of the structure. The road on which the building stands is an extremely busy commercial artery, is the government waiting for a major mishap to take place before taking action.
