That must have been a very challenging and exciting task, cleaning up the Moira river, picking up 358 kgs of garbage. Notable achievement, one would say. The volunteers must be appreciated for this initiative of clearing the Moira river, perhaps they may get emboldened to undertake such tasks at other locations as well.
All very well, but what next? Will they continue doing this on a regular basis, spending their time, effort and energy? In Mumbai too, there are regular, massive beach clean-up drives at several locations. The garbage is handed over to the civic authorities for disposal. The question is how long would this go on? We need to get at the root of the issue.
How is all the trash landing up on the beaches, in the rivers, on the streets? It is the basic civic sense that is lacking in our country. Rather than conducting such clean-up drives, we need to educate the public about this basic civic sense of how to dispose of the trash. Otherwise, such clean-up drives only end up as a PRO exercise. Can we get down to basics, please?
