There is outrage over the continued organization of illegal cockfights in the villages surrounding Margao. This is going on allegedly with the active participation of migrants and the involvement of a few locals.The authorities in Goa have taken a strong stand against illegal bullfight taking place in the state. However residents have reportedly accused the police of turning a blind eye to cockfights despite repeated complaints and submission of credible evidence. It is learnt that these cockfights draw large crowds, especially on weekends and involves open gambling and betting raising serious concerns about law and order, animal cruelty and public safety in the area. The cocks used for cockfights are specially bred and conditioned for increased stamina and strength. They are bred to be aggressive towards other males of their species. Cockfights can even end in the death of one of the cocks. Such fights are illegal in India and is banned under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. Cockfights continue to be popular in villages in India and courts have reiterated that the ban must be strictly enforced. Goa Police must act decisively to stop this violent sport.
