Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a reduction of ₹100 in the cooking gas cylinder price for all customers as a gift to 316 million households on International Women’s Day. The government had also slashed cooking gas prices in August last year by Rs 200 per cylinder ahead of assembly elections in five states. The soaring LPG prices have significantly strained household budgets. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking a third term in power in the world’s biggest democracy, which has been reeling under inflationary pressure that typically is a big issue going into the general elections.
GOACAN, also known as Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network, has expressed serious concerns regarding the rise in incidents of LPG theft and the illegal practice of refilling water in gas cylinders. There has been a consistent increase in the number of grievances from LPG customers who claim to have been receiving domestic cylinders that are lighter in weight than they should be.
Following a string of raids conducted by the Department of Legal Metrology, it was discovered that the cylinders being delivered were underweight, indicating theft. The individuals involved in the illegal operation came up with a plan to conceal the theft by refilling the cylinders with 4 kg of water. This was done to avoid detection of any underweight cylinders.
