These days we watch the news in horror as heavy rains and the resultant flooding particularly in north India are wiping away homes, businesses and killing people. All of this is now becoming a regular feature not only in India but also in many parts of the world. It’s quite evident that climate change is causing of all these disasters and the Indian ruling politicians will show concern and also offer some sort of assistance to the affected people. Specific corporates backing the ruling party are allowed to bypass critical environmental guidelines to exponentially grow their fossil fuel business and also high level of corruption is allowing all sort of illegalities ie hill cutting, sand mining, filling of low lying areas/water bodies, chopping thousands of trees, destroying/poisoning mangroves etc. Just watch what’s happening now in Goa. We have in our power to stand up/confront corrupt politicians in Goa for instance (Govt, panchayats, municipalities, etc) and even specific/destructive real estate entities; but how many of us do? It pains me to say this but should such disasters strike closer to home, Goans will have to suffer.
