Psychosocial support is yet another dimension of services that the Goa government implemented to alleviate the emotional impact on COVID-19 patients of South Goa private hospitals and their families. The government utilised the services of the counsellors of South Goa colleges through the Directorate of Higher Education and our first-hand experience was that it was a wise decision.
The stress and anxiety one feels when they or a family member tests positive is immense. Overwhelming emotions can aggravate existing physiological conditions. The tele-counselling services provided to patients and families that required assistance in addressing their psychosocial needs enhanced their spirit of resilience. The 13 counsellors from South Goa colleges providing tele-counselling worked with complete dedication to deliver the much required support effectively. By providing a non-judgemental safe space, a patient, listening ear and implementing required interventions, they were able to guide people in various circumstances through their guilt, fear, anxiety, grief and trauma associated with COVID-19. The efficacy of their counselling Services could be gauged from the words of gratitude received from patients and their family members.
