Debunking rumours about withdrawal of Rs 500 notes

In an age where digitally altered content can spread faster than wildfire, recent viral claims ” purporting that the Finance Minister and RBI Governor have advised banks to stop disbursing Rs 500 notes by September 2025 ” have triggered unnecessary alarm among the public. A reality check with leading banks revealed no such directive, exposing these posts as fabrications.

Unfortunately, such misinformation disproportionately affects senior citizens and vulnerable groups, who rush to banks out of fear and uncertainty. Social media, while powerful, often lacks the filters of authenticity, leaving citizens susceptible to panic.

Thankfully, the Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check Unit has stepped in, clarifying that this advisory is fake. The PIB Fact Check service exists to counter exactly this kind of viral deceit and serves as a reliable guide for citizens navigating claims that seem dubious.

It is imperative that the public verifies such information before acting on it. Panic-induced bank rushes, reminiscent of past currency withdrawals, can be avoided if we pause, check, and trust verified sources. Let us rally together to promote digital literacy and encourage everyone ” especially our elders ” to rely on credible updates from the RBI, the Ministry of Finance, and PIB’s fact-checking team. Let truth be louder than fiction.
