Democracy at cross roads

Democracy in India and our State is in turmoil due to defections encouraged by all political parties as the means to retain power through back door when mandate is lost.

Anti-Defection Law has become redundant due to circumventing and parties subverting norms to hold to power. No party is interested in seriously taking cognizance as it is a win-win situation.

A few changes can be incorporated. Defectors must be banned for the full term and be disenfranchised. Those resigning must pay the costs of re-election.

Have a relook at Speaker being redressal officer and all disputes be addressed in a limited time-frame.

No democracy in the world to my knowledge encourages defections of anytime or poaching by parties.

Coalition politics is in vogue despite its pitfalls.
