South Goa district hospital was built in order to provide spacious better facilities then the Old Hospicio hospital in Margao. However the recent assembly session saw heated arguments between the opposition leaders and health minister over private medical college or hospital at SGDH. The question hour saw chief minister and health minister cornered with questions over government plans. As per health minister, the private nursing college is under consideration as per Niti Aayog plans in public private partnership (PPP) and decision is pending for consideration. The opposition has ruled out establishing such college as the hospital is built for public health treatment and not for private enterprise. As many patients from south Goa have to go GMC, Bambolim SGDH was a better place to get treatment as it saves time and money of common people. The district hospital is yet to be equipped with laboratory testing as many have to get tests done outside. It's therefore in the interest of public that the hospital is for treatment purposes. Government should see if the medical college will benefit the locals and is useful for patients in terms of treatment.
