It is learnt that the River and Navigation Department (RND) is mulling to levy charges for carrying two-wheelers on the ferry boats across the state.
The proposal to levy charges is reportedly under process. There is also a proposal to enhance the toll fee charges for four-wheelers. There is a move to levy the charges as the department is incurring losses in running the ferries.
It is pertinent to note that the ferry service forms an important mode of travel for thousands of commuters who have to cross the various rivers that crisscross the state in order to reach their destination.
The importance of the ferry service is significant in the absence of bridges connecting the various islands to the mainland. In order to make travel convenient for the citizens it is prudent for the government to build bridges wherever necessary.
It is for the government to bear the expenses of operating the ferry service in the State in the absence of the bridges. It is pertinent to note that there is no charge levied on two-wheelers and four-wheelers for crossing the bridges.
