In April, 31 laptops were magnanimously donated to the Goa police in the Chief Minister’s office as a CSR initiative. The benevolent gesture was made by one Vaibhav Thakur of South Mumbai, who posed as a jewellery shop owner and donated the laptops on behalf of an NGO. Recently, he was arrested on Dec 7 by the Maharashtra police for allegedly cheating a Zaveri Bazaar jeweller to the tune of Rs 2.8 crore by posing as an officer with the Maharashtra Chief Minister’s office. On learning this, the Goa police were directed to return the laptops to the police HQ, Panaji (TG Dec 11).
Hope the cops checked the laptops for bugs, malware, Trojan horses, etc. before using them. Hopefully, in the last eight months, no sensitive information has been accessed by or transmitted to the donor of the laptops. The cops could undertake a background check of those donating freebies and the reasons behind the generosity.
